XFT-2001F G5 FES Foot Drop System — 5th Generation Foot Drop Rehab for Stroke

SKU NEU-REHAB-0102

The XFT-2001F G5 Foot Drop System is the fifth and most advanced generation of XFT Medical's world-leading functional electrical stimulation (FES) foot drop rehabilitation platform — backed by over 10 years of dedicated research and development experience in foot drop treatment. Building on the clinical success of the G1 through G4 systems, the G5 introduces an even more compact and comfortable form factor, an innovative anatomically engineered cuff with multi-age adjustability, and a patented EMG biofeedback system that transforms conventional gait rehabilitation into an engaging, gamified iPad training experience.

Two Modes: Gait (Walk-Aid) Mode & Training Mode

Gait Mode (Walk-Aid Mode) The primary clinical mode. The MEMS sensor monitors the patient's gait in real time and delivers stimulation automatically at the precise swing phase moment during active walking. Used during functional walking sessions — community ambulation, physiotherapy gait training, and daily mobility — the Gait Mode provides real-time foot drop correction that enables safer, more natural walking and delivers the high-volume, task-specific repetition required for neuroplastic motor pathway reconstruction.

Training Mode A static or semi-static stimulation mode for structured therapeutic exercises without active walking. Training Mode is used for muscle strengthening, neuromuscular re-education, spasticity management, range of motion maintenance, and prevention of disuse atrophy — providing therapeutic benefit during seated or supported exercise sessions. Training Mode is appropriate for patients who are not yet ambulatory, for warm-up and cool-down phases of gait sessions, and for targeted strengthening exercises prescribed by the physiotherapist.

How MEMS Gait-Triggered FES Works — The Science Behind the G5

The XFT-2001F G5 uses a sophisticated three-part process to deliver precisely timed, therapeutically effective foot drop correction during real walking:

Step 1 — Gait Phase Detection An advanced MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) sensor integrated into the stimulator unit continuously and simultaneously tracks the position, angle, and speed of the patient's lower leg as it swings forward during walking. Proprietary AI-driven algorithms analyse these three parameters in real time to identify the exact moment the swing phase begins — when dorsiflexion is needed to clear the foot from the ground.

Step 2 — Stimulation Triggering The instant the MEMS sensor confirms the swing phase threshold has been reached, the device automatically delivers a precisely calibrated biphasic electrical pulse to the common peroneal nerve and tibialis anterior muscle through the integrated electrode cuff. This stimulation evokes dorsiflexion — the lifting of the foot — at exactly the right phase of the gait cycle, synchronised to the patient's own walking rhythm.

Step 3 — Stimulation Off at Heel Strike When the sensor detects that the foot is approaching the ground for heel strike, stimulation is automatically ceased — allowing a natural, controlled foot placement without sudden muscle release. The system adapts continuously to changes in the patient's walking speed, stride length, and terrain — including stairs, grass, carpet, and slopes — without requiring manual adjustment.

The result: the affected foot lifts correctly during every swing phase, enabling the patient to walk more steadily, naturally, and safely than is possible with any passive orthotic device.

Therapeutic & Neuroplasticity Benefits — More Than Just a Walking Aid

The XFT-2001F G5 is not merely a walking aid — it is a rehabilitation device that produces lasting therapeutic benefit through repeated use. The mechanism of benefit operates at two levels:

Immediate Functional Correction During active use, the G5 corrects foot drop in real time, enabling patients to walk safely and naturally with immediate reduction in fall risk, fatigue, and compensatory gait patterns. This functional benefit is available from the first session.

Long-Term Neuroplasticity — The Carryover Effect Repeated gait-triggered FES training leaves progressive traces on the cerebral cortex. Each stimulation-assisted step transmits proprioceptive and motor feedback through the peripheral nervous system back to the central nervous system — reinforcing damaged motor pathways through high-volume, intention-matched, task-specific repetition. Clinical evidence from FES foot drop research demonstrates that consistent use produces lasting improvement in unaided walking function that persists even when the device is not being worn — a phenomenon known as the therapeutic carryover effect.

Documented clinical benefits of regular XFT foot drop system use include:

  • Improved ground clearance during swing phase — elimination of toe drag
  • Reduced tripping and fall incidents
  • Reduced compensatory movements — less hip hitching and circumduction
  • Reduced walking effort and fatigue
  • Reduced spasticity in calf and quadriceps muscles
  • Increased walking speed and stride length
  • Heel strike with eversion — more natural foot placement
  • Improved foot position stability during weight-bearing stance
  • Greater safe walking range and community mobility
  • Long-term carryover improvement in unaided walking
