Dynamic Tape Black Tattoo — Original Biomechanical Tape for Muscles
Dynamic Tape Black Tattoo is the original version of Dynamic Tape — the world's first Biomechanical Tape™, designed by musculoskeletal physiotherapist Ryan Kendrick for a fundamentally different purpose than kinesiology tape or rigid athletic tape. Where kinesiology tapes work neurophysiologically — lifting skin, creating space, and producing subtle neurological inputs — Dynamic Tape works mechanically, acting like an external spring or muscle to directly absorb load, resist and decelerate movement at one end of range, store that energy, and reinject it back into the system to assist the return motion. All without restricting range of movement.
The Black Tattoo version is the most commonly used tape in the Dynamic Tape range and has slightly higher resistance and recoil than the Beige Tattoo — making it the preferred choice for most clinical applications, particularly musculotendinous injuries, high-load training environments, and multi-joint taping.
The Biomechanical Taping Mechanism — Spring, Not Skin
Dynamic Tape is designed around a viscoelastic bungee cord principle. Applied in the shortened position with tension, the tape stretches with the body as it moves toward end of range — generating a continuous, increasing resistance force that decelerates the movement and absorbs the mechanical load that would otherwise fall on the injured or overloaded tissue. At end of range, the stored elastic energy is released, providing a recoil force that assists the shortening phase of the movement — reducing the work required from the muscle or tendon.
This mechanism is fundamentally different from kinesiology tape, which only registers significant resistance at its rigid endpoint at maximum stretch. Dynamic Tape generates 10-15kg of resistance throughout range — a genuine deceleration force that can measurably change movement patterns, reduce load on specific structures, and modify kinematics in real clinical applications.
Research has shown Dynamic Tape can successfully change position, movement patterns, and movement velocity, as well as create significant compression when applied correctly.
Why Black Tattoo Has Slightly Higher Resistance
The Black Tattoo and Beige Tattoo are both formulations of the original Dynamic Tape — same base material, same 4-way stretch, same medical-grade Japanese adhesive. The Black Tattoo has slightly higher resistance and recoil than the Beige, making it the primary choice for most clinicians. The Beige Tattoo is preferred when a more discreet application is needed (less visible under clothing or at work) or when the patient has sensitive skin and would benefit from the slightly lower forces exerted on the skin surface.
Clinical Applications — What to Use Black Tattoo For
- Musculotendinous Injuries — Muscle tears, hamstring strains, calf tears, quadriceps injuries. The tape acts like an external elastic muscle, absorbing the load that the injured tissue cannot manage during the recovery period.
- Tendinopathies — Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, proximal hamstring tendinopathy, rotator cuff tendinopathy. The tape unloads the tendon by assisting the muscle action that loads it, allowing progressive exercise rehabilitation without symptom provocation.
- Multi-Joint Applications — The tape's 4-way stretch allows spanning multiple joints without restricting movement at any of them — useful for lumbopelvic-hip applications, shoulder complex taping, and lower limb chain load management.
- Posture and Movement Pattern Modification — Applied to encourage specific movement patterns in sport or work, the tape provides proprioceptive and mechanical feedback that helps re-educate kinematics in real-time functional movement.
- Compression Applications — When applied with sufficient tension, Dynamic Tape can generate clinically significant compression to assist with oedema management and joint stability.
Medical-Grade Japanese Adhesive — Long Wear & Water Resistance
Dynamic Tape uses a medical-grade acrylic adhesive sourced from a Japanese manufacturer — chosen for its combination of strong adhesion, skin compatibility, water resistance, and zero sticky residue on removal. The tape is latex-free and leaves no adhesive residue on the skin. Correctly applied, it withstands swimming, showering, and sweaty training sessions for multiple days without peeling. The tape should be applied to clean, dry, lotion-free skin with large anchor points, and tension should be applied progressively from the anchor rather than over-stretching the tape end.
